Thinking without ‘the box’

The year 2020 will be remembered by most as one of the hardest, most unusual years. Covid19 challenged our sense of security, our sense of freedom, our economy and safety. It challenged our mental health and our resilience. We just wanted 2020 to be over. ASAP.

This is 2021 and little has changed. We already knew things would not change. But this didn’t stop us from wishing ourselves back to normality while zooming our New Years Eve with friends and relatives. What normality? The way things were before. Why? Because we felt safe. Really? Not really, but this ‘old way’ is all we know. So even though it wasn’t working anymore, we still felt safe.

Aaaahhh… Here we go.

The thing is that these next few years are going to shift us forwards whether we want it or not. And, as we know, resistance is the root of all suffering. So we want to shift with the times and not get left behind. Why would we want to avoid our own evolution?

This week Mercury meets Jupiter and Saturn in Aquarius squaring Uranus retrograde in Taurus. In English, this is beyond ‘thinking outside the box’, we are now getting rid of the box. We want to expand and grow (Jupiter) our thinking and communications (Mercury) in completely new and untested ways (Aquarius). There may be more news about restrictions (Saturn), but as long as Jupiter is close to Saturn these won’t be too bad, so we will be able to breathe.

In the early morning of Wednesday (5am in London, UK) we will have a new moon in Capricorn. This will be in exactly the same degree as last year’s new moon in Capricorn, allowing a second chace for us to deal with those same Capricorn issues we were facing a year ago but in a very different way, with a very different approach. This is a Sun + Moon + Pluto conjunction in the same degree, allowing for a huge transformation.

Capricorn deals with security, ambition, career, social status, planning… have these changed during the last year? What is security for me now? How do I plan things amidst so much uncertainty? Has my career been threatened? Does it have to evolve and change with the times? How can I reinvent this area of my life? Just a few prompts for a bit of journaling work gearing to this Wednesday’s new moon. Sit and write or record your thoughts and then set your intentions out on Wednesday. This is a great time for manifesting, but in order to manifest our intentions have to be crystal clear.

The week ends with a square between Jupiter in Aquarius and Uranus in Taurus bringing in a strong ‘crazy scientist’ energy, mad new technology, inclusion of minorities, new resources becoming available… Uranus in Taurus could be working remotely, cryptocurrency or being caring towards the Earth. Great time to max our creativity in ways never seen before!

This week’s yoga and astral insights 26.10.2020

This is my favourite time of the year as we approach Samhain or the Day of the Dead.

As the trees dress their beautiful autumn colours, they get ready to shed the ‘dead’ weight, dropping their old leaves to turn in and focus on new growth.

This is a time for us to do just that, to start shedding the old and make space for a bright new beginning. But first, we must spend the winter in the dark, doing our inner work and getting our roots strong and our trunks firm and healthy. These months ahead are a time for inner reflection in darkness, resting and nourishing our inner realms. This is the most important work, which is most times overlooked, as while it is happening we cannot see changes in the outside. But trust we must: clearing our outer and inner spaces, setting intentions and allowing moments for idleness… understanding that space has to be given for the inner workings to happen.

We have a full moon coming up for Halloween, on October 31st. This is a blue Hunter’s Moon in Taurus, one of the brightests moons in the year. The sun is in Scorpio and the moon will conjunct Uranus, the planet of the unexpected. This will bring lightening-like flashes of clarity. There is a huge illumination energy this whole week, culminating this Saturday. This is said by astrologers to be the most intense period of 2020. This full moon makes the unconscious become conscious. This is a great period to be spending time in meditation and journaling. Pay attention to your dreams as these may bring things to light.

New moon in Gemini, artist unknown

Dear yogis and yoginis,

Gemini is the star of this week, headlining both the Sun – from this Wednesday – and the Moon – on Friday. Gemini, ruled by Mercury, is all in the mind and its energy is light, outgoing and when out of balance can be a little ADD, as it loves variety and multitasking.

New moons are usually about new beginnings. However, this Friday’s new moon in Gemini, is asking you to re-cycle, re-evaluate and re-fresh more than starting something brand new. Why? Because it comes with a Mercury – Venus conjunction and a Sun – Saturn trine; and both planets (Venus, ruling my wants and desires and Saturn, ruler of rules and order) are retrograding.
Is there anything in your life which feels a little outdated and will do with a makeover? Well, this is a great time to do this!

Full moon in Scorpio meditation and ritual

As the full moon reaches its peak tomorrow 10:45, I am writing this so you have enough time to prepare for your own full moon ritual. It will be very simple, with objects you have in your home. Rituals work best when you make them your own, so I will give you some ideas and guidelines and then all it takes is your creativity and commitment to follow through so your intention materialises.

Intention.
This is the most important thing in rituals. Make sure your intention is clear. Scorpio is the deepest, most emotional sign (feminine, fixed, water) and this full moon wants to illuminate those conditionings, fears, patterns which are buried deep into the psyche so they can be transformed. So I encourage you to sit in meditation before your ritual, to connect with the full moon. My own personal recommendation time-wise is to sit in meditation for a half hour.

Gather together:

– A candle, any candle or tea light, white is best – this represents fire. Preferably a match to light it

– Bring on your crystals, if you have any. Otherwise anything which represents earth for you can be used instead: a stone, sand, soil, branches

– Incense, sage, palo santo… to cleanse – these represent air

– And finally water in any form: a simple bowl of water will do

– On top of these bring an image / figure / your own drawing of a deity (any deity) you want present in your ritual. I chose Ganesh, destroyer of obstacles and he is holding up Fortuna, the Roman goddess representing luck and the ups and downs of life. The possibilities are endless here, so choose someone or something you truly connect with

– Any trinkets you want to bring in which will bring meaning and power to the ritual. I have Ganesh holding a red and blue feather, for example, this feather represents the freedom and lightness of flight; its colours water and fire; and she is being grounded by Ganesh and her round belly. So the four elements are also represented here

– Last you will need a piece of paper and a pencil or pen and a fire resistant bowl or plate

Find a space where you can be relaxed and won’t be interrupted. Outdoors is best, or anywhere where you can get a glimpse of the full moon. If you need to sit on a cushion or chair to be comfortable in meditation, make sure you bring it into the space.
Light the candle with the match stick and place it in the middle of this space.

Cast a circle of protection around the space you will be working in. There is many ways to do this. A very effective way is to light your incense / palo santo / smudge stick in the candle and walk around the space holding it, cleansing the space and casting a veil of protection around it. Use your own words here as you walk around the circle. You can just say: ‘I am safe inside this circle, I am protected’.

Now sit in front of the candle and gaze at it. Take the piece of paper and start burning its edges on the candle. Be careful as you do this and keep your mind focused. Make sure the whole edge of the paper is burned, this will seal its contents.

Next start preparing you altar for the ritual. Place the rest of the elements around the candle and the paper and pencil / pen close to you. Have a drink of water from the bowl so you start connecting with this element and sit comfortably. If you have a timer you can set to bring you out of the meditation, set it now – I recommend ‘Insight timer’ which is a free app with a very simple yet effective timer. Otherwise you may choose to bring yourself back whenever it feels like the right time. Ground your sit bones as you start your meditation and connect with the moon, visualise her beautiful pale white halo bathing you and ask her for insights: ‘what needs to be transformed?’ ‘what has reached its sell-by-date and needs to go?’ Be open and receptive, allow these insights to come to you.

Once your meditation is finished, download those insights into the fire sealed paper. Try not to think about it and just pour them onto the paper. This paper is sealed with the element of fire, standing for transformation, destruction and creation, purification. Once you finish, hold the paper in front of you, and visualise whatever your wrote in your paper, literally leaving your body and being absorbed by your paper. Now it is all sealed in the paper. Fold or loosely scrunch the paper and burn a corner with the candle flame. Be safe as you do so and quickly place it into the fire resistant bowl. Watch it burn and be conscious of how you feel as you do so. Do you feel lighter? More energised? More positive? If you write a journal, write these feelings down. What is your next step? How will this transformation manifest?
Write down what comes to you from the heart, to earth it. Make a commitment. Every day do something small which brings you closer to that change. The full moon will be back and then you can peel yet another layer, but, for now, well done and keep up the good work of being present and attuned to the moon cycles!
