Xmas and New Year Yoga

Welcome to that liminal time between Christmas and New Year… Endings to tie up and plans for new beginnings as we come out of the Xmas slumber and back into reality. And reality is uncertain right now. Even our NYE plans are uncertain as we wait for announcements with, possibly, more restrictions in the next few days.

Getting used to uncertainty takes time and practice. Being able to live in the present moment is not easy feat, especially when surrounded by chaos and fear. As human beings we need some kind of order in our lives. Some routines. We like to make plans.

The good news is that we ourselves can create those routines and rituals to bring in some much needed grounding, such as:

  • On waking: free-write three pages in your journal, let it run, whatever comes to your mind. Get it all out before you start your day!
  • Reward yourself with your favourite cuppa, tea or coffee, as you write your morning pages
  • Think of three things you are grateful for each day – you may choose to write these down in your journal so you can go back to them when you need to
  • Spend some time in meditation. Even if it’s just 5 minutes. I do 11 minutes each morning. I recommend some good noise canceling headphones and a simple timer – I use InsightTimer (you can choose your own background music and bells). Try to focus on your breath and every time you stray – and you will, we all do! – just bring yourself back to the breath. Start small, then slowly add more time if you feel you need to
  • If you sit down a lot for work, set some alarms in your phone throughout your working day to get up and move. Science tells us that moving the body also moves the mind (mind and body are one after all!), so play your favourite tune and have a little dance, or do some yoga, you will see how your creative juices start flowing!
  • Join a class – yes it is good to have recordings and freedom to practice whenever we feel like it instead of at an established time but hey, it is even better to connect with others and practice together, either online or in person. Connection is a human need, we are pack animals after all. Lack of connection brings feelings of ungroundedness and depression, as well as anxiety
  • Go for walks in nature. Get lost. Awaken your own intuition. Leave your phone’s maps behind and trust your gut. This is gold and we are totally missing this nowadays. But it is never too late to start to remember!

My two cents to structure and routine: I have added free recordings throughout the holidays until we reopen on 12.1.2022, every Wednesday and Sunday there’ll be an evening flow class and morning flow class recordings for you to access. Recordings for this week are already up and next week’s will be up next Monday. You can access these from now until the end of the day’s class (ie. Wednesday class ends at 8.15pm so you can access this class from now until that time only).

Truth and dare – testing out our own new ways

It is undeniable that there is a huge need for change, collectively as well as personally. This is a strong energy, whether we like it or not. It feels like when our forever favourite jacket just doesn’t do it anymore or when we realise that we stopped enjoying our favourite breakfast – this was a while ago… but, why do we keep eating it then? Inertia. This is the auto-pilot state. This is us resisting, not hearing, ignoring while everything else screams: TRY SOMETHING NEW. And perhaps we are able to still keep some of our old security like we bought our home, still have a stable job and money in the bank… but how is this useful when everything else evolves to a different place? It is not. Therefore, our best bet is to let go…

The Sun and Mercury enter Aquarius this week Tuesday, bringing good chances for new connections and opportunities – and perhaps some surprise news!

If you have been feeling particularly rebellious or have found others behaving this way recently, this could be due to Mars meeting Uranus in Taurus this Wednesday. Uranus in Taurus already brought in a very volatile energy and now Mars injects the action in this conjunction. Watch out for small accidents, people acting in erratic ways and watch out for out of control fire, literally and metaphorically.

Mars in Taurus squares Jupiter in Aquarius on Saturday, calling us to experience and expand our own creativity by acting on it – time to try new things out! This is when we’d feel like trying some of our new ‘crazy’ ideas and go mad… and, why not?!
Venus in Capricorn sextiles Neptune in Pisces showering us with relaxing, lovey dovey, arty vibes … what is not to like?

We will get some evaluation time on Sunday when the Sun meets Saturn in Aquarius – time to apply our common sense and reflect on what works and what doesn’t. Mercury will start retrograding the week after, which will reinforce our reflection time.

This week’s yoga and astral insights

Thinking without ‘the box’

The year 2020 will be remembered by most as one of the hardest, most unusual years. Covid19 challenged our sense of security, our sense of freedom, our economy and safety. It challenged our mental health and our resilience. We just wanted 2020 to be over. ASAP.

This is 2021 and little has changed. We already knew things would not change. But this didn’t stop us from wishing ourselves back to normality while zooming our New Years Eve with friends and relatives. What normality? The way things were before. Why? Because we felt safe. Really? Not really, but this ‘old way’ is all we know. So even though it wasn’t working anymore, we still felt safe.

Aaaahhh… Here we go.

The thing is that these next few years are going to shift us forwards whether we want it or not. And, as we know, resistance is the root of all suffering. So we want to shift with the times and not get left behind. Why would we want to avoid our own evolution?

This week Mercury meets Jupiter and Saturn in Aquarius squaring Uranus retrograde in Taurus. In English, this is beyond ‘thinking outside the box’, we are now getting rid of the box. We want to expand and grow (Jupiter) our thinking and communications (Mercury) in completely new and untested ways (Aquarius). There may be more news about restrictions (Saturn), but as long as Jupiter is close to Saturn these won’t be too bad, so we will be able to breathe.

In the early morning of Wednesday (5am in London, UK) we will have a new moon in Capricorn. This will be in exactly the same degree as last year’s new moon in Capricorn, allowing a second chace for us to deal with those same Capricorn issues we were facing a year ago but in a very different way, with a very different approach. This is a Sun + Moon + Pluto conjunction in the same degree, allowing for a huge transformation.

Capricorn deals with security, ambition, career, social status, planning… have these changed during the last year? What is security for me now? How do I plan things amidst so much uncertainty? Has my career been threatened? Does it have to evolve and change with the times? How can I reinvent this area of my life? Just a few prompts for a bit of journaling work gearing to this Wednesday’s new moon. Sit and write or record your thoughts and then set your intentions out on Wednesday. This is a great time for manifesting, but in order to manifest our intentions have to be crystal clear.

The week ends with a square between Jupiter in Aquarius and Uranus in Taurus bringing in a strong ‘crazy scientist’ energy, mad new technology, inclusion of minorities, new resources becoming available… Uranus in Taurus could be working remotely, cryptocurrency or being caring towards the Earth. Great time to max our creativity in ways never seen before!

This week’s yoga and astral insights 26.10.2020

This is my favourite time of the year as we approach Samhain or the Day of the Dead.

As the trees dress their beautiful autumn colours, they get ready to shed the ‘dead’ weight, dropping their old leaves to turn in and focus on new growth.

This is a time for us to do just that, to start shedding the old and make space for a bright new beginning. But first, we must spend the winter in the dark, doing our inner work and getting our roots strong and our trunks firm and healthy. These months ahead are a time for inner reflection in darkness, resting and nourishing our inner realms. This is the most important work, which is most times overlooked, as while it is happening we cannot see changes in the outside. But trust we must: clearing our outer and inner spaces, setting intentions and allowing moments for idleness… understanding that space has to be given for the inner workings to happen.

We have a full moon coming up for Halloween, on October 31st. This is a blue Hunter’s Moon in Taurus, one of the brightests moons in the year. The sun is in Scorpio and the moon will conjunct Uranus, the planet of the unexpected. This will bring lightening-like flashes of clarity. There is a huge illumination energy this whole week, culminating this Saturday. This is said by astrologers to be the most intense period of 2020. This full moon makes the unconscious become conscious. This is a great period to be spending time in meditation and journaling. Pay attention to your dreams as these may bring things to light.

New moon in Gemini, artist unknown

Dear yogis and yoginis,

Gemini is the star of this week, headlining both the Sun – from this Wednesday – and the Moon – on Friday. Gemini, ruled by Mercury, is all in the mind and its energy is light, outgoing and when out of balance can be a little ADD, as it loves variety and multitasking.

New moons are usually about new beginnings. However, this Friday’s new moon in Gemini, is asking you to re-cycle, re-evaluate and re-fresh more than starting something brand new. Why? Because it comes with a Mercury – Venus conjunction and a Sun – Saturn trine; and both planets (Venus, ruling my wants and desires and Saturn, ruler of rules and order) are retrograding.
Is there anything in your life which feels a little outdated and will do with a makeover? Well, this is a great time to do this!
